Your data stays yours.

Last updated May 7, 2026

The short version

arttō is built so that we never see your data. Everything you capture — photos, notes, exhibits, locations — is stored on your iPhone and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your personal iCloud account. It does not pass through our servers, and we have no way to read it, copy it, or share it.

What stays on your device

  • Photos you take of artworks and wall text.
  • Titles, artists, dates, materials, venues, and any notes you add.
  • Geolocation tags attached to exhibits or individual works.
  • AI-generated metadata extracted on-device from your photos.
  • Search indexes and similarity embeddings used for browsing your catalog.

Wall-text reading, metadata extraction, and visual similarity all run on-device using Apple Intelligence and Apple's on-device machine learning frameworks. None of your photos or notes are uploaded to arttō for processing.

iCloud sync

If you enable sync, arttō uses Apple's CloudKit to mirror your catalog to your private iCloud account so it appears across your devices. This is governed by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy. arttō has no access to your CloudKit data — it lives in the private database tied to your Apple ID.

You can disable iCloud sync for arttō at any time in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud.

What we don't collect

  • No accounts. arttō does not require sign-up or login.
  • No tracking, advertising IDs, or third-party analytics SDKs in the app.
  • No selling, sharing, or licensing of user data — there is none to sell.
  • No reading of your photos, notes, or location history by arttō or its operators.

Crash reports and diagnostics

If you opt in to share diagnostics with app developers in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements, Apple may forward anonymized crash reports and performance metrics to us. These reports do not include your photos, notes, or catalog contents. You can turn this off at any time in iOS Settings.

Deleting your data

Delete the app and your local data is gone. To remove iCloud-synced data, go to iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → arttō → Delete Data. Because we never had a copy, there is nothing for us to delete on our end.

Children

arttō is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them. Since the app collects no personal data on its own, this concern is largely moot — but we're noting it for completeness.

Changes to this policy

If we change how arttō handles data, we'll update this page and revise the date above. Material changes — for example, ever introducing a server-side component — would be announced in-app before taking effect.
